From Placement Student to Volunteer: My Journey at Citizens Advice Stevenage

My journey with Citizens Advice Stevenage began as part of my work placement, where I was eager to gain practical experience in a professional environment and learn more about how charities support local communities. What started as a placement quickly became an opportunity to develop new skills, build confidence, and gain a greater understanding of the positive impact Citizens Advice has on people's lives.

From the beginning of my placement, I was introduced to different areas of the organisation, giving me a broad understanding of how the service operates. This provided a strong foundation and helped me appreciate how every team and every role contributes to delivering free, confidential and impartial advice to those who need it most.

Learning Through Shadowing

One of the most valuable aspects of my placement was the opportunity to shadow advisers and colleagues across different areas of the organisation.

Observing experienced staff at work gave me first-hand insight into the variety of issues clients bring to Citizens Advice, from housing and employment to benefits, debt and family matters. More importantly, it showed me the importance of listening carefully, communicating effectively and ensuring every client feels respected and supported.

Shadowing also highlighted the teamwork that takes place behind every piece of advice. Whether supporting clients directly or working behind the scenes, everyone plays an essential role in helping people find the information and support they need.

Supporting Projects Behind the Scenes

As my placement progressed, I had the opportunity to contribute to a range of projects that supported the wider work of the organisation.

One of the highlights was contributing to the Citizens Advice Stevenage Annual Report. Being involved in this project gave me an appreciation of how the organisation measures its impact, celebrates achievements and demonstrates the difference its services make across the local community.

Alongside this, I supported administrative work, research activities and other projects that helped strengthen my organisational, communication and problem-solving skills.

Engaging with the Community

A particularly rewarding part of my placement has been taking part in community outreach events.

These events provided the opportunity to engage directly with members of the public, raise awareness of the services Citizens Advice offers and connect with local organisations and community groups. They demonstrated how important outreach is in ensuring people know where to turn for trusted advice and support.

Taking part in these events has strengthened my confidence, improved my communication skills and reinforced the importance of making services accessible to everyone.

Continuing to Learn as a Volunteer

When my placement came to an end, I chose to continue my journey with Citizens Advice Stevenage by becoming a volunteer.

Volunteering has allowed me to build on everything I learned during my placement while continuing to gain experience across different areas of the organisation. Every opportunity helps me develop professionally, deepen my understanding of the advice sector and contribute to projects that benefit the local community.

Looking Ahead

My experience at Citizens Advice Stevenage has shown me the value of community-focused services and the dedication of the people who deliver them every day.

From shadowing experienced colleagues and contributing to the Annual Report to participating in community outreach events, I have gained valuable knowledge and practical skills that will support my future career.

As I continue volunteering, I look forward to learning even more, supporting new initiatives and contributing to the organisation's ongoing mission of helping people find a way forward. It has been a rewarding journey so far, and I am excited to continue being part of the Citizens Advice Stevenage team.
